In every profession, from business to law to education, those who are adept with language and communication command respect.

To that end, students at Union College may choose a major in either Literature or Mass communication. Both majors can lead to either a Bachelor of Science degree or a Bachelor of Arts degree. The Bachelor of Arts degree requires the equivalent of two years of a foreign language. Students can minor in English/Communication. Through the English/Communication courses, students gain better writing and speaking skills. The understanding of human nature and different cultures that comes from reading literature and speeches, from studying the mass media and persuasion, and from producing various types of texts such as essays, speeches, brochures, websites and video DVDs will enrich their lives after college, whatever careers they choose.

The department offers opportunities for producing texts outside the classroom as well. Students may write and take photographs for the yearbook, publish creative work in the annual literary magazine, Reflections, and film, edit and produce work for the campus TV station.
