Is your university accredited?
Union College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) to award Associate, Bachelor, and Master level degrees. What materials do I need to apply?
Entrance Requirements for admission at the pre-candidacy level:

Pre-candidacy allows you to begin coursework while you are in the process of completing candidacy requirements. You will apply for candidacy to your program of study after completing 12 to 18 hours of coursework. The admission process varies depending on the program of study that you select. How do I get a paper application?
You can visit our campus and complete an application, or you can download the application here and mail it to the Graduate Studies office.

Do I need to take an entrance exam for admission into the Graduate Studies programs?
Applicants to a degree program in education must send official copies of one of the following:
- Valid teaching certificate
- Or test scores from the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) or Miller Analogies Test (MAT)
Applicants to a degree program in psychology are required to take the Graduate Record Exam (GRE). Each program has set a minimum combined score for admission to candidacy. Minimum combined (verbal + quantitative) scores are as follows:
- M.A. General Psychology: 800
- M.A. Clinical Psychology: 1000
- M.A. Counseling: 1000
How will I know if I've been accepted?
Once the Graduate Studies staff has received all initial enrollment materials, they will process your application and notify you by email that you have been accepted. You will receive information about your Union user account as well as a Graduate Studies Checklist listing the requirements for candidacy and program completion.

Is financial aid available to graduate students?
Yes. Graduate students are eligible for student loans.
How do I apply for financial aid?
These are the steps in the financial aid process for graduate students:
- Complete a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) at www.fafsa.gov
- Complete a Master Promissory Note and Entrance Loan Counseling for Subsidized/Unsubsidized Loans at www.studentloans.gov if you haven't previously received loans through the Federal Direct Loan Program. This program began July 1, 2010.
- Complete a Graduate Loan Request Form at located here. This form can be found on the graduate studies page and the financial aid page.
- Once the financial aid office receives all of the above requirements, loans will be processed based on the number of hours that you are registered for.

When are classes offered?
Union College offers 13 enrollment terms for graduate students. Click here for an illustration of these terms and visit our academic calendar.
We offer classes at times convenient to working students, including nights, weekends, and online. View our graduate course schedule on My Union. Click on Course Search and choose the enrollment term that you would like to view. For graduate courses only, choose Division: Graduate.
Where can I take classes?
Union College's main campus is in Barbourville, KY. We also offer select classes at locations in Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia.

What are the tuition rates?
Tuition for on-site classes is $355.00 per credit hour. Tuition for online classes is $390.00 per credit hour.
How do I register for a class?
Graduate students register for classes using My Union. Students will receive a My Union username and password upon their admission to Union College. After logging onto My Union, click on the Graduate Studies tab and choose Add/Drop. Be sure to check the academic calendar for dates when students can begin registering for a new term as well as the last date to add/drop a class each term.
How do I drop a class?
During the add/drop period for each term, graduate students may use My Union to drop classes. If the add/drop period is over for the term, please contact your faculty advisor.
Can I transfer credits from another university?
Union College does accept transfer credits for coursework completed at a recognized and regionally accredited graduate school.
In education programs, students may transfer up to 9 hours towards a Master of Arts program or Rank I program in Education. If a student completes both the Master of Arts and Rank I programs at Union, he/she may transfer up to 15 hours total towards both programs. Education students may not use transfer credit for the following courses: EDUC 500, EDUC 502, EDUC 513, EDUC/EDAD 670 and EDUC 551.
In psychology programs, students may transfer up to 9 hours prior to candidacy. After admission to candidacy, students may petition for up to 6 additional hours to be transferred if those hours are directly comparable to his/her planned program.
If you are a current Union College graduate student and would like to transfer credits into your program, please send official transcripts and a detailed course description of the courses taken to your academic department.
Program Requirement Questions [Top]
How much of my program can be completed online?
Union College offers two programs that can be completed entirely online. These programs are the Master of Arts in General Psychology and the Chemical Dependency Counselor Certificate. Learn more about our entirely online programs.
Union College also offers online courses in all of its graduate degree programs. Students in the graduate education programs can take no more than 50% of their coursework through online courses. Students in the clinical psychology and counseling programs can also take no more than 50% of their coursework through online courses.
What is alternative certification?
The alternative certification program is designed for individuals who have a bachelor's degree and who wish to earn a teaching certificate. Upon successful completion of the program, candidates will earn recommendation for Kentucky certification in one of the following certification areas:

What is the eportfolio?
Education students will be using Chalk and Wire for their electronic portfolio. Students will receive an introduction to Chalk and Wire during the orientation class GRST 500, and the first post on Chalk and Wire will be the GRST written exercise. Portfolio assignments will also be embedded in the following courses: EDUC 500 (for master's students), EDUC 502, EDUC 513, and EDAD/EDUC 670 (for Rank I students). Students in these classes will complete portfolio requirements as part of their coursework, as directed by their professors. Students who take GRST 500 will receive an email with portfolio log in information, and any questions can be emailed to eportfoliohelp@unionky.edu or contact the Department of Education at 606-546-1796.
Psychology students will have the option to complete a portfolio if they will need a portfolio for future employment or graduate study.
Is there an orientation for graduate students?
Both our education and psychology programs include an orientation to graduate studies. Education students will take GRST 500 and psychology students will take GRST 501. Students should register for these orientation courses during their first semester of classes.

How do I request a Union transcript?
Students may request copies of their transcripts from the Registrar's Office. The first copy is free; each additional copy is $5. Written requests should include date(s) of attendance, last 4 digits of your social security number, and a complete mailing address. Use the Transcript Request form from the Union website.

How do I apply for graduation?
Education students: All prospective graduates must submit a Graduation Packet to the Registrar's Office. The Graduation Packet is located on the Graduate Education webpage.
Psychology students: Graduation requirements are located on the Graduate Psychology webpage.
What is the inclement weather policy?
Please visit the inclement weather information page for more details about Union's policy. Evening classes will be adjusted as needed and will be announced by 3:00 p.m.
