Congressman Hal Rogers to be Commencement Speaker

Union College will welcome U.S. Congressman Hal Rogers (R-Ky. 5) as commencement speaker on Sunday, May 6.

"Congressman Rogers has had a long and distinguished career in the U.S. House of
Representatives," said President David Joyce. "His dedication to economic and
educational vitality in Eastern Kentucky is evidenced everywhere one looks."

"Union College honored the Congressman in 1981 with an honorary Doctor of Laws for his work in Washington," Joyce continued. "It is appropriate to invite him back to campus to address our graduates after twenty years of successful service to his region and his
country."

Rogers has represented southern and eastern Kentucky in Congress since 1980. He
is a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee and has actively
supported programs that provide economic growth, better roads, protection from
flooding, and more jobs for all America's workers. As chairman of the House
Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, State, and the Judicary, he
controls the budgets of many of the nation's law enforcement, economic development,
international trade, and immigration agencies. He also serves as vice-chairman for the
Energy and Water Development Subcommittee, which provides funding for the Army
Corps of Engineers and the Appalachian Regional Committee.
