Union College Raises $1600 for Cystic Fibrosis Foundation

Union College students, staff and faculty, along with several community residents, walked for 2 hours on Saturday, April 7, raising over $1600 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Nearly 30 people participated in the event, which was organized by Union's Common Partners Office.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the number one genetic killer of children and adults in the United States today. Approximately 30,000 people have CF, and more than 10 million Americans are symptomless carriers of the defective gene.

The defective gene in CF patients cases the body to produce an abnormally thick, sticky mucus, which leads to chronic and life-threatening lung infections and impaired digestion. Scientists, supported by the CF Foundation, are quickly translating what they learn about the CF gene into promising new treatments. Based on their success, landmark gene therapy studies and clinical trials on new drug treatments are now underway.
