Union Meets the Kleist Challenge
Student Apartments to be Dedicated August 6
A $300,000 transfer of stocks from William "Bill" Stewart of Flat Lick, Ky., brings Union's total contributions for Phase One facilities to just over $2.8 million, the amount required to receive a $700,000 matching gift from the Kleist Foundation.
In recognition and appreciation of his generous gift, the student apartment complex will be named the William S. and Lou Lyttle Stewart Apartments. Dedication ceremonies are scheduled for Monday, August 6 at 11 a.m.
Stewart, former owner of Ely Fuel in Flat Lick, and a horseman with interests in Knox and Fayette counties, has been a long-time supporter of Union, establishing the William S. and Lou Lyttle Stewart Scholarship Endowment Fund in 1993, which has provided annual support to worthy students from Bell, Clay, Harlan, and Knox counties.
While a student at Union, Stewart was active in social, academic, and athletic organizations including the French Club. In 1990, he received the Alumni Award for Distinguished Service.
In 1998, the Peter D. and Eleanore A. Kleist Foundation issued a challenge grant to Union, pledging a gift of $700,000 if Union raised $2.8 million in contributions for Phase One facilities projects by 2003.
To date, Union has raised over $9.7 million for endowment, program support, and capital projects toward its $15 million campaign goal.
