Campaign for Union Reaches 85% of Goal
December was second best month since Campaign began in 1998
Contrary to the continuing spate of depressing economic news, December 2001 was the second most successful fundraising month ever for the Campaign for Union College, with gifts totaling just over $830,000. The $15 million campaign, which began in October 1998, has reached 85% of its goal, with just under $12.7 million in gifts, grants, pledges and deferred commitments as of December 31.
In addition to gifts to the Annual Fund, endowments and other programs, the two most significant gifts received last month are a $300,000 grant from the James Graham Brown Foundation of Louisville, KY and a $100,000 gift from a Union College trustee. The Brown Foundation grant will be used to update the residence halls, including modernizing bathroom facilities, replacing room furniture and mattresses and installing an electronic keycard system on external entry doors, which will greatly enhance dorm security. The anonymous trustee gift, which is the first installment of a significant pledge, is earmarked for major improvements to the Weeks-Townsend Memorial Library, including replacement of the heating/cooling system and the roof on the original building.
Union College is a learning community dedicated to creating personal, intellectual, and social transformation through the pursuit of knowledge, wisdom, service, and spiritual growth. Founded in 1879, the College is affiliated with the United Methodist Church.
