Union College Celebrates 123rd Commencement
Following in the footsteps of over 12,000 who came before them, 142 undergraduates and 134 graduate students received their degrees from Union College at commencement ceremonies held May 5 in Union's Robsion Arena.
"Adapt and overcome and never give up," urged commencement speaker Frank Stonitsch, New York City firefighter and 1995 Union alumnus. "Union taught me to never give up without a fight," said the former competitive swimmer and later graduate assistant and swimming coach. "If you put your mind to it, no one can stand in your way," he told the graduates, also emphasizing the importance of a sense of humor. "Laugh as much as possible . . . nobody knows what tomorrow will bring, so enjoy each day to its fullest."
A member of Engine Company #266 in Queens, Stonitsch was among the hundreds of firefighters dispatched to Ground Zero in the aftermath of the September 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. Rather than recalling the horrors of that day and those that followed, Stonitsch shared stories about the unity and patriotism he has seen. Pulling a rounded nugget of glass from the pocket of his dress uniform, he explained it came from one of the towers. Rather than a macabre souvenir, said Stonitsch, it's a reminder"
of where we've been, where we are and where we should be. This piece of glass represents the perseverance and unity of individuals and a nation during a horrific life challenge."
Inundated with messages of concern and support in the days after the attacks, Stonitsch also told graduates to value the relationships they've made during their time at Union College. "Cherish these people-they will be the ones to help you when you need it."
As part of the ceremonies, Stonitsch, as well as his fellow firefighters from Engine Company #266, were presented with a special merit citation for distinguished service.
