Union College Presents: Sacred Stories
The Art of Story in Ministry
Beginning May 14, Union College and UC Institutes are providing a series of five workshops for people involved in all aspects of ministry: full and part-time, lay, youth, and Christian education. The focus of the program is Analogical Theology-the art of deriving sacred meanings from secular stories.Workshop sessions will be held at Union's main campus in Barbourville on Tuesday, May 14, Sunday, May 19 and Tuesday, May 21 per the detailed schedule below. Offered in collaboration with the Appalachian Local Pastors School (ALPS), the workshops are sponsored by the Religion and Public Life Institute at Union College.
The workshops not only will explore how to tell a story, but also provide training and information to help participants in their pastoral work. Participants will enjoy hearing sacred stories from a wide array of ministers and lay people, as well as have the opportunity to share their experiences as they develop their knowledge and understanding of sacred stories.
Cost for the workshops is $5.00 per session (ALPS participants are covered by their tuition). For participants desiring Continuing Education Unit (CEU) credits (1/4 credit per session), the cost is $10.00 per session. Registration is a half-hour prior to each session and dinner will be available for $4.00 in the College cafeteria.
Presenters include Ed Wesley, a professional storyteller from Harlan, who will conduct the Sunday evening workshop and roundtable, as well as the afternoon seminar on May 21. Featured on Tuesday, May 14 is Michael Williams, general editor of The Storyteller's Companion to the Bible, co-founder of "Sacred Stories," an annual event at the National Storytelling Festival, and pastor of Blakemore United Methodist Church in Nashville, Tennessee. Internationally recognized preacher Dr. Ellsworth Kalas will be featured at the evening story roundtable on Tuesday, May 21. A member of the Appalachian Local Pastors School faculty, Kalas is currently Professor of Preaching at Asbury Seminary and author of Parables of Jesus, Parables from the Backside, and 365 Days: From Genesis to Revelation.
