Union Upward Bound Participants on 2nd Place-Winning Team
at Scholars Bowl

Clay County High School seniors Joshua Grubb and Brandon Grubb (no relation) were on the Kentucky state team that won second place in the Scholars Bowl competition held in Atlanta, GA on April 13, where they competed against teams from Tennessee, Alabama, South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida and Georgia. Both students earned their spots on the state team during the Upward Bound quick-recall competition at the Madisonville Community College last month.

Both Joshua and Brandon are participants in the Union College Upward Bound program and were among only six students who qualified for the regional competition. Both will be attending Union this coming fall.

The Upward Bound Program, founded in 1963, was the nation's first program targeted specifically at and for disadvantaged students. The program has been in existence at Union College since 1980.

The program's objectives are to provide disadvantaged students with access to educational opportunities and to increase the number of those students who go on to college, while simultaneously developing the skills needed to be independent, contributing individuals. The program is funded by the United States Department of Education and is administered by Union College's Special Programs office. The Union College Upward Bound Program serves 75 students from seven area high schools. The students in Union's program must be from Knox Central, Barbourville City, Lynn Camp, Owsley County, Leslie County, Red Bird Mission and Clay County.

Union College is a learning community dedicated to creating personal, intellectual and social transformation through the pursuit of knowledge, wisdom, service and spiritual growth.
