Alumni Distinguished Service Award Local theology professor honored for lifetime of service Dr. Bruce Roberts, a professor at Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis, was honored with the Union College Alumni Distinguished Service Award on October 19 at a ceremony held during the homecoming alumni banquet. Following his graduation from Union in 1961, Roberts earned his Ph.D. from Boston University School of Theology. He began his distinguished academic career in 1974 at the former Scarritt College in Nashville, where he taught for 7 years. In 1981, Roberts joined Christian Theological Seminary, where he has served for the past 21 years. During his first 17 years at CTS, Roberts was Associate Professor of Christian Ministries and Director of Continuing Education. During this period, he developed almost 200 continuing education programs for clergy and laity, training nearly 9,500 individuals. He has also overseen the field education program, not only training supervisors of theology students, but also consulting with them weekly. Currently, Roberts is Director of the Indiana Clergy Peer Group Study Program, which he established by successfully securing nearly $2.4 million in grants from the Lilly Endowment. Roberts’ other professional activities have been extensive. He has served on numerous advisory committees, authored or co-authored a multitude of professional publications and been very active in professional religious education societies. His personal service record is impressive as well. He has taught Sunday school and served on or chaired a variety of committees at North United Methodist Church. In addition, he has been involved in a variety of civic and community organizations, including 10 years on the boards of both Planned Parenthood of Central and Southern Indiana and Career Planning Centers of America.
