Hundreds Expected to Share in Football,
Reunions
and Memories at Union's 2003 Homecoming
Hundreds of Union College alumni and friends
are expected to converge on campus October 24-26 to catch up with
old friends, watch some football and experience once again a healthy
dose of Union Hospitality.
Events begin October 24 with registration and
a Campus Lunch at the Minton Cafeteria. At 12:30 p.m. you can join
the two-person scramble at the annual Homecoming Golf Tournament
scheduled to take place at the Tri-County Country Club. At 3:00
p.m., join fellow alum for a campus tour. You will be able to see
all the new additions to our campus while learning about future
campus construction projects. Following the tour, at 4:00 p.m.,
there will be an opening reception at the Student Center, then a
campus dinner will be served in the Minton Cafeteria or you can
join the 50th Year and Beyond Dinner Reception upstairs in the Student
Center.
Later that evening, Union student and community
actors will stage a production of "The Good Doctor," by
Neil Simon. The show begins at 8:00 p.m. in Rector Little Theatre.
There will also be a Bon Fire and Pep Rally near the Lakeside ponds
at 9:00 p.m.
On Saturday, October 25, alumni registration begins
at 8:00 a.m. at the Student Center. Then at 8:30 a.m., the Alumni
Association Board will meet at the Edward D. Black Technology Center.
New to this year's homecoming activity schedule
is the newly formed Legacy Society Brunch. The society will be hosting
the brunch at 10:00 a.m. in the Upper Level of the Student Center
to honor those who have or intend to include Union College in their
estate plans. Also at 10:00 a.m., there will be an Alumni Softball
game with the Alumni Soccer Game following at 11:00 a.m.
Also at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, you can join fellow
service providers at the Alumni Service Providers reunion. This
reunion will be held at Weeks-Townsend Memorial Library. For those
whose fondest UC memories are evoked by science, join the Department
of Natural Sciences at a cookout. The cookout is scheduled at 11:30
a.m. at the Science Center. The rest of Union's faithful alumni
can join the fellowship on the front lawn of the Student Center
as the Tailgate Picnic begins at 11:30 a.m.
There will be plenty of fellowship opportunities
on campus at noon on Saturday. The Bennett Center Alumni Reception,
the Young Alumni Reception and the 25th Year Alumni Reception are
all taking place in different areas of the Student Center.
Kick-off for the big game, Union vs. Cumberland,
is at 1:30 p.m. At halftime during the game, there will be a presentation
of the Homecoming Court on the field and class reunion photos will
be taken in the Student Center.
If football is not your game, you can enjoy Women's
and Men's soccer games at 2:00 and 4:00 p.m. respectively on Union's
Soccer Fields.
Cap the whole evening off with a reception at
6:00 p.m. followed by the Homecoming Banquet and Awards ceremony
to induct new Hall of Fame members and to present the Alumni Distinguished
Service and Rising Star Awards. This year's award recipients are:
Larry Inkster, Athletic Hall of Fame; Paul D. Dole, Business and
Professional's Hall of Fame; Irene Hughes, Educator's Hall of Fame;
Charles Reed Mitchell, Distinguished Service Award; Billy Hensley,
Rising Star Award.
Homecoming activities will finish on Sunday, October
26 with the worship service at Conway Boatman Chapel at 11:00 a.m.
followed by Sunday Brunch at noon in the cafeteria.
The theme of this year's Homecoming is "There's
No Place Like Home," a reference to the family atmosphere generated
every year on Union's campus. "Union has some of the most loyal
alumni of any college or university in the nation," said Frank
Newman, Union's alumni director. "They demonstrate that devotion
to the college and its people in great numbers by turning out for
Homecoming to enjoy the warm, exciting atmosphere."
