New Reading Room introduced on campus
The
English, Communications and Modern Language Department just introduced
a new Reading Room to students with a major or minor in one of these
courses of study.
The Reading Room is furnished with books, videos,
games and reports, most of them donated by Professor Dr. Jimmy Smith
and his wife. "This is a space where students and faculty can
get together in a somewhat less formal setting," Dr. Smith
said of the new facility.
According to Dr. Smith, the idea of the Reading
Room had been in the works for the last couple of years. The space
the room occupies was once used as a dumping ground for discarded
equipment, books and other unused materials. The professors, students
and their families emptied the room and stocked the shelves with
a gamut of learning materials. The room even contains a computer,
donated by Professor Samuel Moody, for students to use.
The room is also stocked with a variety of donated
coffee mugs. Dr. Smith has encouraged each student who uses the
room to claim one of their own and inscribe their own personal message
on the mug.
Currently the hours of operation will be
MWF from 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. and TT from 3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Workstudy student Lakita Hampton will be operating the new facility.
