Union College's Kids College camp makes the
Arts and Humanities fun for area children
Accordions,
basket making, painting, dancing and singing were just a few of
the activities enjoyed by local children at Union College's Kids
College Camp. Seventeen children attended the camp and according
to Bobbie Doolin -- one of the event coordinators -- all seventeen
enjoyed an entire week of educational fun.
One of the most popular of the week's events was
the children's experience with the accordion. Local musician Kevin
Rossman brought several accordions for the children to play and
listen to. Three of Union's Bonner students, [The Bonner Program
is one of Union's student service organizations] Travis Carmack,
Chrystal Pridemore, and Hannah Sizemore along with Lee Ann Luxemberger,
the director of the Common Partners Program at Union assisted Kevin
in showing the children how different accordions make different
sounds.
Participants also spent three days focusing on
art. From painting to drawing, local artists Starr Rossman, Freida
Prater and Bobbie Jackson worked with the children teaching them
different techniques and art mediums. "The children produced
many pieces of note-worthy art that is surely gracing many refrigerators
today," Doolin said.
The Kids College week-long camp held June 6-10
was sponsored by Union College and made possible through community
donations and a Fast Track Grant from the Kentucky Arts Council.
Union officials hope that the project will increase community participation
in the arts and humanities by providing programs like the Kids College.
In addition to this program, Union offers a variety
of community events that encourage participation in the arts. Union
College is a member of the Fine Arts Association, which brings several
programs to our area each year. They also encourage community members
to attend the many campus events organized and designed to expose
area members to arts and humanities.
