A thirteen-hour bus ride and a stop at the airport
in Louisville brought nationally recognized New York Jazz quartet
Urban Survival, Music for the Resilient to Union College's campus
on Tuesday, October 12. The group performed several original songs
and some old favorites to a crowd of students, faculty and staff
and community members.
Each number performed was music in motion. From
the sultry sound of the Dennis Riggins' saxophone, to the rising
crescendo of Chris Bowman's animated drum solos and from the deep
sounds of Jim Donica's bass to Ben Lewis' masterful control of the
piano keys, the quartet captivated the audience--nary a foot was
still.
This group is very active in the New York City
music scene playing to capacity crowds at world-famous venues such
as the Knitting Factory and Birdland. The group also tours nationally,
performing in concert venues, clubs and at festivals.
This concert was funded through the generosity
of Union College friend and trustee, Helen Mills and Gary Tannenbaum.
Mills, now residing in New York, is a native of Knox County.
