Two Union College Seniors Selected for State
Government Internship
Two Union College seniors, Amber Hensley and Frank
Hoskins, were chosen to be among the new class of interns at the
state capitol in Frankfort. Hensley will intern at the Governor's
office and Administration Cabinet while Hoskins will intern at the
Transportation Cabinet.
These two Union students are two of twelve students
attending seven of Kentucky's independent colleges. Hensley and
Hoskins were awarded internships to spend the upcoming Spring 2005
semester working in and learning about state government agencies
in Frankfort.
While in the state capitol from mid-January through
May 1, Hensley and Hoskins will also complete two state-government
related seminars and receive academic credit from their home institutions.
The program is tailored to give college upperclassmen an up-close
look at state government. A related purpose is for the experience
to permit them to consider public service as a career option, said
Gary Cox, president of the Association of Independent Kentucky Colleges
and Universities, the organization sponsoring the program.
"The 2005 class is another group of outstanding
young people, and I am sure that they will perform well in their
assorted duties in the governmental agencies to which they have
been assigned," said Richard Wilson, the internship program's
coordinator.
Cox said the administration of Gov. Ernie Fletcher
deserved particular thanks for its strong support of the program
and its continuation. "Without the assistance from the governor's
office and several of Gov. Fletcher's cabinet agencies, this very
successful program would not be possible," Cox said.
Students chosen for the 2005 internships through
AIKCU's Academy for Public Policy and Leadership, and the agencies
in which they will be working 30 hours a week, are:
Governor's Office: Amber Hensley, Union College;
Finance and Administration Cabinet: Lisa Banner, Spalding University
and Pablo Martinez, Brescia University; Kentucky Higher Education
Assistance Authority, Damian Gerlach, Spalding University and
Andrew Spencer, Asbury College; Justice Cabinet: Sarah Medley,
Bellarmine University; Council on Postsecondary Education, Hannah
Hembree, Asbury College; and Commerce Cabinet: Stephanie Ramsey,
Campbellsville University.
Also, Education Cabinet: Eleanor Farler, Pikeville
College; Homeland Security Office: Bryan Conover, Transylvania
University; Personnel Cabinet: Colene Elridge, Transylvania University,
and the Transportation Cabinet: Frank Hoskins, Union College.
Nearly two-dozen students applied for the competitive
internship program. Student selection was based on applicants' desire
to work in government, skills needed by agencies participating in
the program, past academic performance and letters of recommendation.
The AIKCU internship program, through which
students spend their entire semester in Frankfort, is entering its
sixth year. Participating students do internships with members of
the Kentucky General Assembly when that body meets in its biennial
60-day regular session during even-numbered years. The administrative
internship program is held during odd-numbered years. Students also
receive a stipend to partially cover their living expenses.
