Union receives $75,000 for Library Renovation
With little more than four months until the project
is due to be completed, the David and Donna Jones Learning Resource
Center library renovation project received a financial boost. The
George I. Alden Trust awarded the college a $75,000 grant toward
the $1.6 million renovation project.
"The renovation project is well underway
and scheduled to be completed this summer. This grant and other
funds are crucial in helping meet that goal," Tara Cooper,
director of learning and information services at Union said.
Workers can be seen just about around the clock
on campus working feverishly to complete the massive renovation
project that began less than a year ago. College administrators
began contemplating the renovation when they noticed damage from
moisture and mold was threatening the library's many resources.
Among other things, the library will receive a
modern heating and air conditioning system designed to protect the
library's assets. Plans also include improvements designed to make
the library user-friendlier, including a new information desk, a
new reading room and improvements to the reference area.
A community centerpiece, Union's library
serves as a government depository, houses the Cumberland Gap Genealogy
Collection, provides Internet access to students and community members,
and provides access to around 35 different periodical and reference
databases.
