Six Union College students spent spring
break serving low-income families in Saint Stephens, SC. Christie
Cliver, Chris Garland, Shanon Ingram, Chrystal Pridemore, Elizabeth
Reef, and Cullen Smith participated in Alternative Spring Break
2005 March 19-26. The event was sponsored by Union College's Spiritual
Life and Common Partners program.
The group worked on two houses in Saint Stephens,
South Carolina. Students helped to prepare the homes for low-income
families to move in. They repaired roofs and fascia, worked on the
homes electrical systems, built closets, attached hurricane clips,
worked on the homes' foundation underneath the house, and built
a deck.
In addition to helping make two deserving families
very happy, the group had some fun and educational time in Charleston
that included a boat ride and a visit to Fort Sumter. They also
explored the market downtown, and visited the South Carolina Aquarium.
On the way back to campus, the group stopped by the Isle of Palms
Beach for a look at the Atlantic Ocean.
The Bonner Scholars Program and Union College
Community Government helped to sponsor the trip making it a no-cost
trip for the students.
