The Union College Alumni Association presented local businessman and Union College supporter, Cecil Rhodes '60, with the Distinguished Athletic Service Award. The award was presented to Rhodes Saturday, as a part of the colleges annual Alumni Baseball Day.

Rhodes has been involved with the Union College athletic programs in some way since graduating in 1960. For over 20 years, Rhodes assisted at both Union College football and basketball games. Rhodes operated the scoreboard at Union Basketball for almost 20 years and helped the football program, working at home games in the press box, for just over 15 years after the program was re-instated in 1984.

Rhodes devoted his time and energy to the football and basketball programs. "I was glad to help in any way," Rhodes said. "It was good to meet a lot of fine players and see some really good games over the years." Rhodes assisted with local little league programs and worked with various athletic programs in area schools.

Rhodes taught elementary school in Knox County for several years after graduating, but spent more years working for General Motors Acceptance Corporation (GMAC) as a regional representative. Mr. Rhodes currently owns Rhodes Wholesale Tires near his home in Barbourville.

Cecil is a member of the First Baptist Church in Barbourville. Cecil's wife, Betty, a 1960 alum, received her Masters of Arts in Education in 1973. Cecil's son, Steve, and daughter-in-law Virgena all graduated from Union, Steve in 1979 and Virgena in 1980. Steve Rhodes, Cecil's son, said, "I know my Dad is very proud to be recognized for his service to Union, he has always loved Union…"

The Distinguished Athletic Service Award recognizes alumni, faculty, coaches, trainers, friends or other individuals who support Union College and its athletic programs. Traditionally, the candidate serves as a role model for their community and profession.
