Union College recently received a $1,500 donation
from NCS Pearson. The donation is earmarked for the college's annual
Repair Affair fund. Each year, members of the Union College family
spend an entire day making much-needed home repairs for those Knox
County families who either can't afford or aren't able to make repairs
themselves. Typically, several teams of students, administrators,
faculty members, and friends of the college build wheelchair ramps,
repair roofs, and do a lot of interior and exterior painting to
as many as ten homes in one day.
According to Sherry Swafford, coordinating lead
at NCS Pearson, the company believes in giving back to the communities
they work in. They do this in two ways, they make corporate contributions
on a national level to not-for-profit and charitable organizations
that are engaged in activity that is in alignment with their overall
business interest. They also make contributions at the local level
in communities where they have large numbers of employees. The company
is located in Corbin, KY and employs around 300 members of the community.
This year, Union students Chrystal Pridemore and
Elizabeth "Dudley" McKenna will serve as the Repair Affair
project co-coordinator. "We are very grateful to the contribution
by NCS Pearson," Pridemore said. "I look forward to putting
the money back into the community where it is needed most."
