Union College Graduate Studies Expands Online
Courses
Union College has expanded their online courses
for students seeking graduate degrees in education. The college,
along with their online partner, the Learning House, Inc., has increased
the number of courses available to students seeking their Masters
degrees and/or Rank I certificates.
Many graduate classes in education are available
online during summer, fall and spring terms. There are many sessions
during each term so students can finish in a timely fashion. Masters
(Rank II) require 10 classes and Rank I requires 10 more classes
above the Rank II. For students seeking graduate degrees/and or
certification areas, they can complete up to four classes of ten
online. If students are seeking non certification at the Rank I
level, they may take all 10 online. Additionally, according to Dr.
Denzil Edge, President and CEO of the Learning House, Inc., currently,
Union College is the only college or University in the state that
offers Educational Leadership and Special Education Rank I (non-certification)
online. During the 2004 year, all of the Union College graduate
students that took the Kentucky Principal Test for certification
passed.
Last year the Learning House developed a virtual campus featuring
online courses in the discipline of education. Union's first course
started in May 2004 and after great success, expansion plans for
the online program began. According to Dr. Lou Ann Hopper, Dean
of Graduate Studies at Union, the online course enrollment has more
than tripled in the last year. She said of the expansion, "I
am pleased with the level of satisfaction our students have about
the services Learning House enables us to offer. Given that some
of our students have to travel a good distance before reaching our
campus facilities, online courses have helped tremendously."
The graduate school at Union responded to student desires for more
online classes by adding more Learning House classes to their schedule.
Dr. Edge is also pleased about the expansion and had this to add,
"We are excited that the programs are being embraced by the
students enthusiastically and look forward to offering new advanced
programs for Union to reach students nationally and globally."
