Union College Opens its Doors to Students
Displaced by Hurricane Katrina
The Union College administration has reopened
admission for students displaced by hurricane Katrina. The college
will enroll a limited number of undergraduate students displaced
by the hurricane allowing these disaster victims the opportunity
to continue their education at Union during the fall term.
"Although our academic year began August
23, we are in a position to accommodate a limited number of qualified
students who may enroll as non-degree seeking visiting students,"
Dean of Enrollment Management Jerry Jackson said.
"The College will work with faculty to place
students in available classes. On-campus housing will also be provided
on a space-available basis," he continued
College administrators report that this enrollment
option is intended solely for students displaced by the disaster.
The last day for registration as a visiting student is September,
9, 2005. Students must be in attending classes no later than Monday,
September 12, 2005.
Union will waive up to full tuition to students
in this circumstance, asking that any tuition dollars aside from
federal and state aid continue to be directed towards the students'
home school.
Interested students should contact the Union College
Office of Admissions (enrollme@unionky.edu or 1-800-489-UNION) as
soon as possible.
Founded in 1879, Union is affiliated with
the United Methodist Church. The College is located in rural southeastern
Kentucky.
Volunteers Needed!
Hurricane Katrina Relief
Wednesday-Friday, 3-8PM
Saturday, 12-4PM
As Rev. David Miller sent out last week, Bingham
Tire and Oil of Barbourville is coordinating a community-wide response
to Hurricane Katrina by collecting donations to be driven to a disaster
supply distribution center near Baton Rouge. They have been working
closely with relief agencies in Louisiana to make this happen.
As supplies are being collected, we are in need
of volunteers to help sort and pack these supplies. We are looking
for groups (teams, clubs/organizations, departments, residence hall
floors, etc.) to assist with this process. We are in need of people
every night (3-8pm) through Friday and all afternoon (12-4pm) on
Saturday. A huge THANK YOU to the Baseball Team and the Discipleship
Team who have already committed to help.
If your group would like to participate in this
effort, please call or email me (Lee Ann Luxenberger) to schedule
a time ASAP. I will then notify Bingham Tire of the full Union College
volunteer schedule.
Thank you in advance for your help with these
efforts.
