Union College Joins in Halloween Fun and Festivities

Union College staff and students joined with the community to make Halloween festive and safe. The fun began on October 30 with Union’s annual Ghost Tour event and continued on Halloween with the Children’s Art Program and downtown Barbourville’s Fright Night.
Union College’s Ghost Tour was a resounding success. Over 100 participants from both the campus and the community were taken on a tour of some of Union’s spookiest sites and told “true” ghost stories that have become a legendary part of the campus’ history. Student actors told of “Mack,” the bull dog that once served as the college’s mascot, and the sightings reported of him since his demise 34 years ago. Other tales included “The Heavy-Breathing Ghost in Centennial Hall,” “The Legend of the Speed Hall Ghosts” and “The Whirling Papers in Lakeside.”
The Children’s Art Program was much less spooky, but just as fun. Local children worked with Union student volunteers to carve pumpkins. The weekly art program is sponsored by Union’s community service office, Common Partners, and is available to area children free-of-charge.
Union’s Halloween fun ended with Fright Night. Union students and staff helped support the local event by staffing an Amazing Race-type activity for fifth through eighth graders. More than 40 Union volunteers helped with the activity, most of whom are members of the college’s baseball team. Common Partners volunteers served as coordinators.
