55 first and second grade students from G.R. Hampton Elementary School visited Union College’s campus last week. They were treated to a day of reading, art and outdoor fun by campus staff.

Mrs. Julie Osborne, a parent of one of the students and wife of Union’s head baseball coach, Bart Osborne, thought a visit to Union would be an ideal field trip for the children. The students enjoyed a story in the Timeless Tales reading room, made “pop tab snakes” and colored sand jars in the Children’s Art Room, and played basketball outside with giant yellow balls and a hula hoop.

Union College’s existing children’s programs made it easy to provide entertainment for the young visitors. The Common Partners office, through its Bonner Scholars service program, has created two outreach activities for local children in the past several years. The Timeless Tales reading program offers tutoring support for young readers and the Children’s Art Program gives children the opportunity to explore and create art. Both are offered free-of-charge and are staffed by trained campus volunteers. They each also have dedicated spaces. The Timeless Tales reading center is located in the library and features a wide selection of children’s books and resources. The Children’s Art Room is in the Center for Spirituality and Service and is well-stocked with a variety of art supplies.
