Union Tackles Hunger with Pennies, Cans, Banquet

Three Union College events scheduled as part of National Hunger and Homelessness Week will educate the campus community about hunger issues, raise funds and collect food to help address the problem.

The Union College Food Drive takes place between November 6th and 17th on campus. Non-perishable food items will be collected at five Union locations. All items will be donated to the Christian Life Fellowship Food Pantry in Barbourville. Community members who would like to donate items may bring them to Speed Hall or the Sharp Academic Center.

The same week is the annual Penny Harvest, a contest between Union’s clubs and organizations to see who can raise the most pennies. To make the contest more interesting and increase the amount of money raised, the scoring system adds points for pennies but takes points away for silver coins. All proceeds will be donated to Heifer International, a non-profit group that addresses hunger and poverty by providing productive farm animals to needy families.

Tuesday, November 14 is the Third Annual Union College Hunger Banquet. This is an interactive banquet with an MC and a few surprises. The purpose of the event is to “learn about world hunger issues and how what we do impacts others globally.” The banquet will be held in the Patridge Campus Center in conference rooms A, B and C at 7:00 PM.
