Three Union College Bonner Scholars, along with their program coordinator, presented the Christian Life Food Pantry with a gift of $500.00 on Wednesday, April 4. The gift will help the pantry procure a deep freezer.
Christian Life’s Tommy Warren recently faced the dilemma of receiving a donated deep freezer, but of having no way to pay the cost required to ship the freezer to Barbourville. Magdalyn Mayes, a Bonner Scholar who has volunteered at the pantry for the past year, submitted a grant request to the Bonner Foundation’s Community Fund. When she learned the grant would be awarded, she chose to surprise Mr. Warren with the news. Magdalyn, along with two other Bonner Scholars and Lee Ann Luxenberger, their program coordinator, presented the check to a pleasantly surprised staff. The $500 gift will be used to have the donated freezer shipped to the pantry.
“It’s not everyday you get something like that,” said Mr. Warren. “Maybe two times a year we get over $100. We live on donations and volunteers.” Mr. Warren explained that the pantry has often been forced to reject donations of meat and poultry or other perishables because they did not have freezer storage. The new freezer means adequate storage and more food for the pantry’s clients.
