Some Spots Still Available for Teachers’ Trip to Africa
Applications are still being accepted for teachers in Southeastern Kentucky to travel to Cameroon as part of a Fulbright Hays Group Projects Abroad program.
According to Dr. Fidelis Achenjang, a Union College professor who serves as the project’s director, teachers have until the end of April to submit their materials. Dr. Achenjang requests that each applicant submit a letter of intent, a current resume, and letter of support from a principal.
Thanks to a Fulbright Hays Grant and the support of Union College, ten teachers will have airfare, other travel costs, lodging, and food expenses covered. “This is a rare opportunity to travel at little cost to participants, learn about another culture, and work with colleagues on curriculum development,” says Dr. Achenjang.
The five-week seminar on “The Interaction of Environment and Culture in Cameroon: An Interdisciplinary Area Studies Curriculum Development Project,” will begin in mid-to-late June. The travel program gives teachers unique opportunities to gather items supportive of their instruction on the topic, especially indigenous arts and crafts and environmental specimens. Participants will meet with and interview Cameroon teachers, public policy experts, government officials, artists, and religious leaders.
Union College encourages K-12 teachers in Southeastern Kentucky to apply for the seminar in Cameroon. Teachers may submit their materials to cjones@unionky.edu or call Dr. Charles Jones at 606-546-1283.
