Union College Theatre will open its fall production on October 25 with a modern spin on a classic tale.
Dr. Rebecca Pettys, UCT director, has chosen Another Antigone by A.R. Gurney for the fall offering. Performances begin on Thursday, October 25 and continue October 26, 27, November 2, and November 3. The October 27 performance begins at 8:30 p.m. All other performances start at 8:00 p.m. Tickets will be sold at the door of the theatre for $5.00.
The play’s action revolves around Judy Miller, a college senior majoring in business, and Professor Harper, who is teaching a course on Greek tragedy. Judy takes the class and is assigned a formal research paper. When she chooses to write her own version of Sophocles’ Antigone to fulfill the assignment, and update the conflict to an anti-nuclear protest, Harper refuses to accept it.
What ensues pits Judy, who insists on completing and producing her play, against Harper, whose refusal to accept her project may cause Judy not to graduate. The entire campus is drawn into the confrontation as the play is produced: Harper becomes Creon, the symbol of immoveable authority, and Judy becomes Antigone, the ultimate rebel.

The cast of Another Antigone, left to right: Rebecca Liford-Hibbard as Judy, Katrina Belcher as Diana, Jason Johnson as David, Nick Harris as Professor Harper.

Nick Harris returns to UCT as Professor Harper, a man who clings to traditional standards of excellence. Harris performed in last season’s A Case of Libel. Rebecca Liford-Hibbard, a newcomer to the UCT stage, will play the part of Judy. Liford-Hibbard directed last summer’s A Thousand Cranes for the Kids College Art Camp.
Completing the small cast is Katrina Belcher and Jason Johnson. Belcher will play Diana, the Dean of Humanities, while Johnson is Judy’s boyfriend, David. Diana is conflicted as she attempts to serve as the voice of the college’s administration. David is also torn: he is expected to support Judy, but has been so inspired by Harper that he changed his major.
The Union College Rector Little Theatre is located in the Fine Arts Building, adjacent to Conway Boatman Chapel on campus in Barbourville. For more information or for directions, visit the Union College website at www.unionky.edu.
