Author, Hip Hop Artist, Prison Activist to Speak at Union College
Bryonn Bain, a self-described prison activist, hip hop artist, spoken word poet, author, actor and educator, will bring his charismatic approach to social justice to Union College on January 10 at 9:30 a.m. He will be the featured speaker at the college’s spring convocation, an annual event that kicks-off the spring semester and honors Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The public is invited to attend. While in his second year at Harvard Law School, Bain was wrongfully imprisoned. He later shared his experience in an appearance on “60 Minutes” and in “Walking While Black,” a cover story published in Village Voice. Twenty million viewers tuned-in to hear his story, and the Village Voice article sparked the largest response in the newspaper’s history. Bain, with degrees from Harvard, New York University and Columbia University, has been called “a poet who speaks his truth with a power we desperately need to hear” by scholar Cornel West. He was named the Grand Slam Poetry Champion at the Nuyorican Poets Café in New York and at The Third Rail in Boston. Bain is also a Rhodes Scholar finalist and was named one of “30 People Under 30 Who Are Changing Your Future” by UTNE Reader. He has earned the attention of the BBC, CNN, Discovery Channel, Court TV, MTV and “The O’Reilly Show.” Bain currently hosts “My Two Cents,” a weekly talk show on BET-J. He will appear in a soon-to-be-released film, “Pig Hunt,” directed by Academy Award winner Jim Isaac. Bain is also the lead in an off-Broadway comedy, “From Auction Block to Hip Hop,” at the Florence Gould Theater. He recently released “Problem Child,” his debut album.
