Union College’s Minorities Day to Explore Affrilachian Experience
For its annual Minorities Day on January 23, Union College will host author and poet Crystal Wilkinson and hold a panel discussion on the diversity of the African-American experience. Wilkinson’s presentation, the panel discussion, and a reception will take place from 7-9 pm in the Student Center on campus. The event is free and open to the public.
Crystal Wilkinson is an acclaimed author and part of the Lexington, Kentucky-based writing collective, The Affrilachian Poets. She writes about her identity as an African-American and Appalachian in such essays as “On Being ‘Country’: One Affrilachian Woman’s Return Home,” and in her books Blackberries, Blackberries and Water Street. Wilkinson’s work has been featured or reviewed by The Washington Post, KET’s “bookclub@ket,” Kentucky Living magazine, and The Courier-Journal.
Minorities Day is an annual Union College event planned to coincide with Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. The event celebrates minority populations through a chosen theme. This year’s theme is “The Diversity Within the African-American Community.”
