On March 29, images of the Redbud Trail and Quilt Festival and the video production work of Union College students will reach viewers across Kentucky.
Kentucky Educational Television (KET) will air video coverage of the Redbud Festival in an episode of Kentucky Life scheduled to air Saturday, March 29 at 8 p.m. on KET 1 and Sunday, March 30 at 4:30 p.m. on KET 1 and 7 p.m. on KET2.
According to Dr. Christine Marley Frederick, who leads the mass communication program at Union, KET invited her students to help capture video of last year’s Redbud Festival. Several students in one of Dr. Marley’s classes agreed to help. They joined a KET camera person in recording many of the festival’s activities, including those related to quilting. The Kentucky Life episode in which the festival footage will appear is expected to have a segment devoted to the topic of quilts and quilting.
Dr. Marley says this is the first time her students’ work has appeared on statewide television. “It was really exciting to be invited to work with KET on this project,” she says. “I didn’t realize how open they were to community involvement in their projects.”
Though KET’s audience is the largest to see work produced by Union’s mass communication program, its students have had plenty of exposure. Mass communication students regularly create Union College advertisements as part of their coursework, many of which are placed on the campus cable station, Union’s website, and on YouTube. They have also produced video for local community groups and churches. Mass communication students dabble in short film as well, with their original work airing at campus events.
“Most of my students prefer doing something as opposed to tests and papers,” says Dr. Marley. She makes sure they have plenty of opportunities to gain first-hand experience. The partnership with KET is just one example. In recent years they have traveled to New York to work with industry professionals and to Africa to help document a field study with Kentucky educators.
Dr. Marley’s students are currently working on a television program that will help young voters learn more about presidential candidates in preparation for the upcoming election.
