Faculty Recognized for Research, Teaching, Service

Several Union College faculty members were recognized for research, teaching and length of service as the spring semester came to an end.

Professor Andy Messer, assistant professor of recreation management and director of outdoor programs, was named the 2008 SGA Distinguished Professor of the Year during Honors Day Convocation. The award, which recognizes a commitment to excellent teaching and the encouragement of personal, rewarding connections, is presented each year by the Student Government Association. The recipient is selected by members of SGA. Professor Messer was chosen for his dedication to outdoor recreational and educational opportunities for Union students.

Dr. Randy Botkin, professor of recreation management, was presented with the 2008 Excellence in Teaching Award during Union’s commencement ceremony. The recipient is chosen by the Faculty Relations Committee. During the award presentation, Dr. Tom McFarland, vice president for academic affairs, noted the extent to which Dr. Botkin “personifies the essence of both the college’s mission and core values” as the reason for his selection.

At the annual Faculty and Staff Recognition Program, three faculty members were honored for teaching and research. Dr. Candy Wood, professor of English, was presented with the annual Exemplary Teacher Award, sponsored by the Division of Higher Education of the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry of the United Methodist Church. Recipients are chosen based on excellence in teaching, civility and concern for students and colleagues, commitment to values-centered education, and service.

Dr. Hugo Freund, associate professor of social and behavioral sciences, and Dr. Russell Sisson, professor of religion and department chairperson, shared the Excellence in Research Award. The award is coordinated by the Faculty Research and Lecture Committee, which reviews and evaluates submitted research items or projects each year.

Length of service to Union College was also recognized during the program. Awards were presented to the following faculty and staff: Fidelis Achenjang, Robert Armour, Randy Botkin, Tyler Brock, Jon Cooley, Lou Ann Hopper and Whitney Powell were recognized for five years of service; Charles Jones, Mona Powell and Kathy Webb were recognized for 10 years; and Cheryl Robbins earned an award for 25 years of service.

Awards for 35 years of service were presented to Jim Cox, professor of social work and director of the social work program, and Dr. Larry Inkster, professor of health and department chairperson.
