Local Residents Learn How to Work and Go to College

At the Union College London Center open house on June 23, students of all ages learned how to earn a four-year degree while working part- or full-time.

The open house included information on the London Center’s schedule for working adults, how to afford a four-year degree, enrolling at the London Center after graduating from community college, and the academic programs available at the center.

“It’s good to have a chance to sit down with someone who has to work full-time and help them see that they can handle taking college classes,” said Jessica Cook, assistant dean for admission at Union. “Most of our students really want to advance their careers, but they think they have to take classes during the day to get their degree. Our evening classes are meant to work around that obstacle.”

Open house guests explored four-year degree options in both business and psychology. The London Center’s offerings also include a master’s degree in psychology and a certificate in chemical dependency.

“I think what interests a lot of London Center students is the chance to learn alongside other adults,” said Cook. “Students who attend classes here have a lot in common. They’re trying to further their education while working and often taking care of a family. They understand each other, and the London Center understands that their needs are different from the needs of our traditional undergraduate students at our main campus in Barbourville.”

Cook says that special scholarships are available for community college graduates who choose to enroll at the London Center. She also mentioned Union’s 50/50 program, which discounts tuition by 50% for students over the age of 50. Those scholarships, in addition to federal and state aid, help make enrolling in a degree program more affordable.

Another open house will be held on August 7 from 4:00 to 6:30. Those interested can visit www.uclondon.org, or call Union College London Center at 606-877-2627.
