A Look at the Lives of Women Coal Miners: Author to Discuss Book at Union College September 22
Countless authors have written about coal mining and miners, but most often those miners are men.
On September 22 at Union College in Barbourville, a professor and author will share what she has learned about the complex lives of women who work in the mines.
Dr. Suzanne Tallichet, a professor of sociology at Morehead State University, studied the lives of women miners for a recent book, “Daughters of the Mountain: Women Coal Miners in Central Appalachia.” She will talk about her book and discuss women miners during a presentation at Union College on Monday, September 22, at 6:00 pm in the Patridge Campus Center on campus.
“Daughters of the Mountain” explores how a group of women miners coped with work relationships, fared in a male-dominated profession, became and stayed involved with the union, and adapted to mining culture. The women miners interviewed by Tallichet worked at a large underground coal mine in southern West Virginia.
Tallichet has authored or co-authored more than a dozen articles and book chapters. She earned her Ph.D. in rural sociology at Pennsylvania State University and joined Morehead State’s faculty in 1993. In 2007, she received Morehead State’s Distinguished Researcher Award. She is currently serving a one-year term as chair of the Professional Communications Committee of the Rural Sociological Society.
The presentation, sponsored by Union’s Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences and the Honors Community, is free and open to the public. For more information or for directions, contact Union at 606-546-1230.
