"I, Too, Am a Kentuckian" to Kick Off Daniel Boone Festival

“Kentucky’s greatest son,” Abraham Lincoln, will help launch this year’s festival honoring Daniel Boone, Kentucky’s famous pioneer.

Jim Sayre will perform as Abraham Lincoln in “I, Too, Am a Kentuckian” on Monday, September 29, at 7:00 pm at Union’s Conway Boatman Chapel. The event is free and open to the public.

The Lincoln dramatization is the first event in the lineup of Daniel Boone Festival activities. The 2008 festival theme is “I am a Kentuckian-Lincoln,” in recognition of the Lincoln Bicentennial celebration which began February 2008 and continues through February 2010.

“I, Too, Am a Kentuckian” highlights Lincoln’s ties to Kentucky and serves as an introduction “to the man who came from a humble background to change the course of U.S. history,” according to the Kentucky Humanities Council. Kentucky is the birthplace and boyhood home of the former president, and he maintained connections with his native state throughout his career. A panel of historians recently chose Lincoln as “the most influential American who ever lived.”

Sayre’s performance as Lincoln is part of Kentucky Chautauqua, a program of the Kentucky Humanities Council. Kentucky Chautauqua aims to tell Kentucky’s story through historical dramatizations of characters from the state’s past.
