Union Celebrates Homecoming 2008

Union welcomed home alumni from Florida to New York over the weekend for its annual homecoming celebration. Guests were treated to a weekend packed with activities.

On Friday afternoon, several alumni participated in the annual golf tournament at Wasioto Winds.  That evening, graduates from the class of 1958 and earlier, as well as the class of 1983, attended a reunion dinner in their honor.

Friday night, guests gathered for a live, outdoor performance by The Medley Boys.

Saturday’s events featured the traditional homecoming football game and the annual banquet and awards ceremony.  The celebration ended with a worship service and brunch on Sunday.

For many alumni, like George and Lucy Allison of St. James, N.Y., this was their first visit to campus since graduation.  The Allisons had been away for over 40 years until this weekend.

Though George Allison says the front of campus is much the way he remembers it, he was impressed by the addition of Sharp Academic Center.

“That’s a fine facility you have there,” he told the audience after being inducted into the Educators Hall of Fame on Saturday.  The Allisons were classmates of Phillip Sharp, who won a Nobel Prize in 1993, and his wife Anna.  The academic center is named after the Sharps.

In his address at the annual banquet, President Ed de Rosset thanked alumni for their part in the college’s success.  Union is having what many are calling “a banner year,” marked by record-breaking enrollment numbers, increases in retention, a growing student body, new academic programs and physical plant improvements.
