A Doll's House

A Doll's House Opens October 30th at Union College Theatre

Union College Theatre (UCT) will open the curtains on its fall production on October 30 with Henrik Ibsen’s classic, A Doll’s House.

Performance dates are October 30, 31, November 1, 7 and 8.  All performances begin at 8:00 pm in Rector Little Theatre on the Union campus. General admission is $5.00.

Written in 1879, A Doll’s House deals with the roles society expected men and women to play in a marriage.  Although Torvald and Nora Helmer seem to be enjoying a perfect marriage, Ibsen suggests they are playing in a make-believe doll house.

A crisis opens Nora’s eyes to the reality of their situation and her disillusionment results in a decision that shocked audiences all over Europe when this play was first performed.

Leading the cast as Nora, Angie Armstrong brings considerable experience and energy to a challenging role.  During her first year at Union, Armstrong played the lead in both productions of the season:  first as a dazzling, eternal “other woman” in The Skin of Our Teeth, followed by a feisty octogenarian in UTBU (Unhealthy to be Unpleasant).

Union alumnus Jonathan Hendrickson returns to play Nora’s husband.  A combination of sensitivity, intelligence and experience has helped Hendrickson create a character who is more complex than most people realize.  His Torvald is a perfect counterpoint to Armstrong’s Nora.

Jason Middleton, also a Union alumnus, takes on the role of Nils Krogstad, who seems to be a cruel and vicious villain but who emerges as a drowning man trying desperately to survive.

Nick Harris, last seen as the tragic figure in Another Antigone, returns to take on the role of Dr. Rank, a dying man who has found a happy haven in the Helmer household and is loathe to leave without confessing his feelings for Nora.

Debbie D’Anna makes her first appearance on the UCT stage as Mrs. Linde.  Hannah Wallhausser, an eight-year-old charmer, will delight audiences as Emmy Helmer. Chelsea O’Connell and Bethany Hopkins play the servants in the Helmer household.

Jason Johnson leads the technical staff as stage manager.  He is joined by veterans Emily Baker, Cycle Hua and Melissa Garrett, and newcomers Shanya Jackson, Ashley Ramirez, Jesse Beal and Chris Adams.
