Union Social Work Advisory Group Holds First Meeting
Professor Jim Cox, who is leading Union College’s reestablishment of social work as an academic major, chaired the first meeting of the Social Work Advisory Committee on Nov. 21.
The committee was created to invite feedback and input from social service agencies and health care providers who will be involved in the program. Current students, Union faculty and staff, and representatives from several regional agencies attended.
According to Cox, the advisory committee will help provide guidance for the social work curriculum, field education placements and the accreditation process. Comprehensive Care, KCEOC, the Commission for Children with Special Healthcare Needs, Frontier Health, St. Joseph Hospital (London), Appalachian Regional Hospital (Middlesboro) and Mountain Heritage Hospice were among the agencies represented at the committee’s first meeting.
Union College is now accepting students into the social work program and is in the process of seeking accreditation from the Council on Social Work Education. The lengthy accreditation process is expected to be complete by fall 2012.
