Guest Speaker to Address Economic Inequality

Union College will welcome author and “scholar-activist” Rose M. Brewer as its guest speaker for Minorities Day, held during Black History Month each year on Union’s campus.

Brewer will present “Economic Inequality in the U.S. Today: What and How from Here?” on Thursday, Feb. 19 at 7:00 p.m. in room 3125 of Sharp Academic Center.  The event is free and open to the public.

Brewer will outline the economic issues that continue to challenge many Americans, especially the concentration of wealth among a relative few, the prevalence of poverty, the rise in unemployment and access to a college education.  Brewer will pose and help answer the question of what can be done to address these economic issues among the populations they most affect:  African Americans, communities of color, and low- and middle-income white Americans.

Union students will participate in a panel discussion as part of the event.

As a sociologist and professor of African-American and African studies at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, Brewer has written extensively on black families, black women, class and gender, race, and political change.  She has published over 40 refereed journal articles, book chapters and scholarly essays in these areas.  Brewer has co-edited two books and is a co-author of “The Color of Wealth,” published in 2006 and winner of the Gustavus Myers Center Outstanding Book Award.

Brewer defines herself as a scholar-activist and has been involved in a number of social justice issues.  For over a decade, she has been a board member of Project South: Institute for the Elimination of Poverty and Genocide.  She is a past board member of United for a Fair Economy and a founding member of the Black Radical Congress.
