Internships Take Union Students Far Beyond Classroom

Three Union College seniors are using the spring semester to gain valuable, real-world experience before graduation.

Brooks Napier, Deena O’Hare and Stephanie Pateman are in the midst of internships that will give their resumes a boost as they prepare to embark on careers or graduate study.

Stephanie Pateman, a business administration and marketing major, is spending the spring with EMI Music Publishing in New York.  Pateman helps license the music EMI controls for TV shows, karaoke, movies, film, promos, merchandise and commercials.  

“Working in the music industry has opened my eyes to the many different sectors of business,” says Pateman.  “It has allowed me to accumulate real-world experience before graduation, and to be confident as I begin a career.”

Deena O’Hare, a human resource management major, has been placed with Revera Inc. in Mississauga, Ontario, as a human resources recruiting intern.  She spends her days sorting through resumes and setting up pre-interviews and interviews.

O’Hare says the experience has “given me a lot of insight into the world of human resources, and is helping me define a career path.  I am learning so much that I’m confident I will have no problems finding a job after graduation.”

Brooks Napier, a physical education and mass communications major, secured a spot with WYMT, the CBS affiliate in Hazard, Ky.  Napier will get on- and off-air experience in production, editing and broadcast news.  

“It’s been a great experience so far,” says Napier. “I’m getting experience in broadcasting and learning how a TV station operates.”

Napier says he plans to work in sports broadcasting and is “thankful to the staff at WYMT and Union for helping me pursue my dream.”  

Students work with the Office of Career Planning and Placement, faculty mentors, Union staff and alumni to find and secure an internship. Other recent internships include work with the Kentucky Department of Transportation and Jackson MSC.
