Terrell Family Endows Education Scholarship at Union

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Terrell have established an endowed teacher education scholarship at Union College.

The Terrells visited Union to announce the gift formally on Thursday.  They created the scholarship in honor of their daughter, Linda Terrell Tate.

Tate teaches history and language at Corbin Middle School, and has been a teacher since 1979.  Robert Terrell says she “continued a family tradition” when she earned a master’s degree at Union and entered the education profession.  Several Terrell family members, dating back to the ‘20s, are graduates of Union’s education program who taught in the Corbin school system.

The endowed scholarship is in memory of those family members.  They include Lucie Sue Terrell, Amanda Terrell Meeks, Steely Terrell, Viola Terrell Reasor Carter, and Naomi Smith Watson.

Robert Terrell, a Ford Motor Company retiree and board member of Sofcoast of Kentucky, and wife Phyllis, asked that Union name the award the Linda Terrell Tate Teacher’s Scholarship. It will benefit Union College education majors who meet high academic standards and can demonstrate financial need.

In presenting the gift to Union, the Terrells say they are honoring “the teachers of the past, present and future.”

Union College is a private liberal arts college related to The United Methodist Church and located in Barbourville, Ky.
