Union Partners with Yellow Ribbon Program to Make Education Tuition-Free for Vets
Union College will begin participation in the Yellow Ribbon Program on August 1, 2009, making a Union education free for eligible veterans.
The Yellow Ribbon Program is a provision of the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008. The Act covers a fixed amount of the cost of tuition and fees. Union College and the Yellow Ribbon program work together to cover the remaining costs for veterans who meet the program’s requirements.
The program is available for those pursuing bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
Jerry Jackson, Union’s dean of enrollment management, says Union is looking forward to working with area veterans.
“We’re eager to get this program started and to make sure our veterans know they’re welcome as students at Union,” says Jackson. “We’re proud to be able to help cover the cost of a college education for people who have served our country.”
The Yellow Ribbon Program is available at Union’s main campus in Barbourville, and at Union College London Center.
Veterans are eligible for the Yellow Ribbon Program if they served an aggregate period of active duty after Sept. 10, 2001, of at least 36 months, or were honorably discharged from active duty for a service connected disability and served 30 continuous days after September 10, 2001.
Dependants of veterans may also benefit from the program if they are eligible for Transfer of Entitlement under the Post-9/11 GI Bill.
