Alumnus Endows Scholarship to Benefit Southeast Kentucky Students

Don Looper, a Harlan County native and Eastman Chemical Company retiree, has endowed a scholarship at Union College in Barbourville.

Looper is a 1974 graduate of Union.

The scholarship will be known as the Donnie R. Looper Endowed Scholarship in Honor of the Class of 1974 and will be awarded to students from southeastern Kentucky who show academic promise and demonstrate financial need.

Looper hopes his gift will spur others to support the scholarship fund, especially his former classmates.

“Several of my classmates and I were helped along at Union through the generosity of others, and we wouldn’t have been able to afford college without that help,” said Looper. “I hope my classmates will add their support to the class of ’74 scholarship and make a college education possible for today’s southeastern Kentucky students.”

Looper now resides in Bay City, Mich.

Union College is a private liberal arts college related to The United Methodist Church and located in Barbourville, Ky.
