Union Announces Alumni Award Winners
Several Union College alumni will receive high honors next month as part of the school’s homecoming celebration. The awards will be presented during the Homecoming Banquet and Awards Ceremony on Saturday, October 24, at 6:00 pm in Robsion Arena.
Four alumni will be inducted into the college’s Hall of Fame. Alumni selected for the Hall of Fame have made outstanding contributions to their fields, been pioneers in their areas of expertise, and provided leadership at state, regional or national levels. This year’s inductees are Robert William Brock Jr., Orville Walter Dick, Jeremy Macejewski and William Trent.
Robert William Brock Jr., ’63, will be inducted in the Business and Professional Hall of Fame. During his 45-year career in hospital administration, Brock helped lead some of the most prestigious hospitals in the country. After retiring, he founded the Nehemiah Network, which brings together churches, community agencies and business to respond to community issues and needs. Originally from Pineville, Ky., Brock now lives in East Liverpool, Ohio.
Orville Walter Dick, ’56, ’79 MA, is one of two inductees into the Educators’ Hall of Fame. Dick taught math for 52 years in the Harlan County school system and was chosen as Educator of the Year by the Harlan County Chamber of Commerce in 2007. He lives in Cumberland, Ky.
Jeremy Macejewski, ’98, is this year’s inductee into the Athletics Hall of Fame. Macejewski set several school records during his time as a kicker with Union’s football team, most of which still stand. Many considered him a strong prospect for professional football, but a severe ankle fracture ended his kicking career. Macejewski now teaches special education in Michigan and is involved in several programs serving disabled children. He lives in Port Sanilac, Mich.
William Trent, Ph.D., ’66, will also be inducted into the Educators’ Hall of Fame. Trent is a professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and works in the departments of educational policy studies and sociology. Among his research interests is educational inequality, including the effects of desegregation.
Other awards to be presented are the Rising Star Award for young alumni, the Distinguished Alumni Service Award, the Team of Distinction Award and the inaugural Doug and Jane Blair Legacy Stewardship Award.
This year’s Rising Star is Kelly Lee Evans-Rankin, ’00, a physician in Maineville, Ohio. William Simon Davies, ’66, a Barbourville, Ky., native who now lives in northwest Georgia, will be honored with the Distinguished Alumni Service Award. The 2002 women’s soccer team will receive the Team of Distinction award. Kentucky River Properties, LLC, is the first recipient of the Doug and Jane Blair Legacy Stewardship Award.
