‘Play On!’ to Open at Union College Theatre
Union College Theatre’s fall production, Play On!, will open Thursday, Oct. 22, in the Rector Little Theatre. Performances will continue Oct. 23, 24, 30 and 31. Starting time for all performances is 8:00 p.m. Admission is $5.00. Student admission is $1.00.
Play On! is a hilarious farce featuring a community theatre group attempting to rehearse a murder mystery. The mystery’s author, Phyllis, is new at playwriting and continually changes the script, much to the frustration of those trying to get what they’ve deemed a “monstrosity” ready for the audience. Of course, Phyllis thinks the re-writes are turning her creation into a veritable gem. By the time the company is ready to open the show, every possible theatrical catastrophe befalls the play, making Play On! a bellyful of laughs.
The all-student cast of Play On! is a mix of veterans and newcomers. Emily Baker, last seen as a feisty television technician in Comic Potential, plays the distraught director of the murder mystery. Playing the difficult diva of the community theatre group is Chelsea O’Connell, returning to an onstage role after many years as a backstage participant.
Jason Johnson is the vicious villain. Chris Adams, the eccentric’s mouthpiece in Comic Potential, returns as the romantic hero in Play On! Last seen as the dashing romantic lead in Charley’s Aunt, Marcus Ashcraft appears as the theatre’s grumpy and frazzled technician, Lewis.
Newcomer Samantha Caldwell will astonish as the romantic heroine played by the community theatre’s “ditzy blonde.” She is joined by Kenneth Boyer as the diva’s hen-pecked husband who must save his bluster for the murder mystery.
The cast also includes Krystal Webb as Smitty, Will Sanderson as the stage manager and Bethany Broughton as the clueless novice playwright, Phyllis.
