Union Graduate Earns KY Teacher of the Year Award
Union College graduate Melissa Evans, a Corbin Middle School teacher, has been named the 2010 Kentucky Middle School Teacher of the Year.
Evans is a 1993 graduate of Union’s education program. She completed her master’s degree at Union in 1995. Evans also earned her Rank 1 certification at Union.
Evans has taught seventh-grade science for seven years at Corbin Middle School. She is a resource teacher for the Kentucky Teacher Internship Program (KTIP) and for student teachers from Union College, the University of the Cumberlands and Eastern Kentucky University. In 2009, Evans was a finalist in the National Geographic Hands-On Explorer Teacher Challenge Awards program. She was nominated for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science Teaching and was a Fund for Teachers 2009 Summer Sabbatical recipient.
Evan’s professional affiliations include the National Middle School Association, the National and Kentucky Science Teachers associations and the National and Kentucky Education associations.
The Kentucky Teacher Achievement Awards are co-sponsored by Ashland Inc. and the Kentucky Department of Education. Twenty-four teachers were selected in the first tier of the selection process. Nine top scorers—three each from the elementary, middle and high school levels—were chosen in the second round. One teacher from each category was chosen as a Kentucky Teacher of the Year. The overall Kentucky Teacher of the Year was chosen based on a compilation of scores from all phases of judging. Durell “Butch” Hamm of Larry A. Ryle High School in Boone County won the overall award.
