Author & KY Poet Laureate Gurney Norman to Give Reading at Union
Renowned author Gurney Norman will visit Union College Nov. 19 to read from a selection of his new fiction.
Norman, Kentucky’s Poet Laureate, is the author of the novel “Divine Right’s Trip” and “Kinfolks,” a short-story collection. In his 30-year career, he has earned widespread recognition as a writer in the Appalachian and Southern traditions. Norman has edited three anthologies on the Appalachian region. Three short films have been based on his short stories. He is a professor in the University of Kentucky’s English department, where he also directs the creative writing program.
In “New Fiction: A Reading,” Norman will read from his forthcoming books “Ancient Creek and Other Folktales” and “Crazy Quilt: Ancient Creek.” “Ancient Creek” is contemporary fiction in the guise of a folktale from the Kentucky/Appalachian tradition. “Crazy Quilt,” a novel, continues the adventures of Wilgus Collier, the young protagonist of “Kinfolks.” In “Crazy Quilt,” Wilgus is a middle-aged editor and publisher of a small weekly newspaper in Kentucky. At age 53, he reflects on his own life transition and social changes in contemporary America.
Norman’s reading will take place Thursday, Nov. 19 at 7:00 p.m. at Union College’s Weeks-Townsend Memorial Library. A reception will follow. The event is free and open to the public.
Gurney Norman’s reading is funded in part by the Kentucky Humanities Council and Union College. A gift from Barbourville resident Sharee St. Louis Smith also helped make the event possible.
