Union Faculty and Staff vs. Students in Hoopin’ for Haiti
Union College’s Common Partners program will host Hoopin’ for Haiti this Friday at 8:00 p.m.
The event will feature an exhibition basketball game that pits the Union faculty and staff against Union students. The game will be held in Robsion Arena.
Guests will receive tickets to the event in exchange for donations of supplies or cash to assist in relief efforts in Haiti. Donations will be accepted in the lobby of Robsion Arena on the night of the basketball game.
Gabrielle Mellendorf, director of Common Partners, says Union students who have made service-learning visits to Haiti in the past will speak to the audience and show a brief video.
During the week of Feb. 1, Common Partners will staff an information table near the cafeteria in the Patridge Campus Center. The table will help raise awareness about Friday’s basketball game, offer tips about what supplies are most needed in Haiti, and sell T-shirts to raise additional funds.
Money raised during the week and at Friday’s basketball game will be sent to Haiti via the Fondwa Emergency Relief Committee. All donated supplies will be sent to The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). Union College is affiliated with The United Methodist Church.
UMCOR recommends donating materials for a health kit, which consists of hand towels, washcloths, combs (not pocket), nail files or fingernail clippers (no emery boards), a bath-size bar of soap, an individually-wrapped toothbrush and adhesive plastic-strip sterile bandages.
