Union to Host Social Work Career Day During National Social Work Month

Union College’s new Social Work Program will host its first-ever Social Work Career Day on Thurs., March 4, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the upper-level of the Patridge Campus Center.

The fair will allow guests to explore social work careers with visiting agencies, including Hospice of the Bluegrass, Frontier Health, KCEOC and the Laurel County Public Defender’s Office.

So far, over nine agencies plan to participate. Refreshments will be served.

High school and community college students who are interested in earning degrees in social work will be able to speak with Union social work faculty, Union admissions staff, and representatives from the University of Kentucky-Southeast Kentucky Master’s in Social Work Program. Representatives of the National Association of Social Workers will also be on-hand for the event.

Union will offer continuing education (CEU) workshops for practicing social workers as part of the career day. UNITE will lead the workshops in the lower-level of the Patridge Campus Center.

Union is hosting the career day in conjunction with National Social Work Month. This year’s theme is “Social Workers Inspire Community Action.” Jim Cox, the director of Union’s social work program, says the career day will highlight the diversity of positions and careers open to social workers.

“Social workers serve people of all ages in a variety of settings,” said Cox. “They serve in mental health centers, schools, hospitals, family and children agencies, programs for older persons, the criminal justice system, and community agencies.”

Social workers are in demand in Kentucky. Employment of social workers in the state is expected to grow by 20 percent between 2004 and 2014, according to the Kentucky Office of Employment and Training.
