Historic Soldiers & Sailors Re-Opens to Students
A large gathering of students poured through the main doors of Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Gymnasium for the first time in over a decade yesterday.
The Office of Student Development hosted an open house on Tues., Feb. 23, to introduce students and the rest of the campus community to the renovated upper-level of the 1919 structure.
The upper-level features a fully-renovated gymnasium that will serve as an intramural facility for students and the campus community. The space will also host events from time to time. The lower-level was returned to use two years ago as a wellness center complete with cardio and weight-training equipment.
A formal dedication of the renovated building is expected to take place in April. At that event, Union will unveil plans to install a Tribute Wall in the upper-level. The Tribute Wall will continue the building’s legacy of honoring military men and women who have served or are serving the country. Names may be added to the Tribute Wall through June.
