Union and Local Community Partner for Knox County Repair Affair

Fifty volunteers from the Union College campus and surrounding communities gathered on Saturday for the annual Knox County Repair Affair.

After an 8:00 a.m. group breakfast at Union, volunteers divided into five teams to make repairs to five area homes. Contractors served as team leaders at each site.

The five teams built two wheelchair ramps, provided and installed a screen door, painted a house’s exterior, placed vinyl soffit and fascia around a porch and home, cleared brush, and repaired siding, a porch and steps, and gutters.

The event was organized by Union’s Common Partners program, which oversees all service-learning activities at the college. KCEOC helped select homes for repair.

Repair Affair is in its 13th year. The effort began as a grant-funded partnership between Union College and KCEOC. Over time, Union assumed the role of organizing and funding the effort. The event provides basic home repairs for low-income and/or disabled individuals or families.

Area individuals, organizations and businesses help fund the supplies for repairs and the lunches served to volunteers at each site.

Repair Affair is the largest service event hosted by Union each year. The college’s Common Partners program is also home to several service programs for children, including Timeless Tales tutoring, Bulldog Buddies and the Children’s Art program
